Starting and Stopping the Monitoring Agent
After installation, the monitoring agent starts automatically and begins collecting user activity data. On each operating system boot, it starts without user intervention, ensuring continuous data collection.
The agent's operation depends on the license. If no monitoring license is assigned to a user, the agent does not transmit data to the server even if installed and running.
You can stop the agent if necessary, for example, for system maintenance or troubleshooting. When stopped, data collection completely ceases.
Starting the Monitoring Agent
No manual action is required to start the monitoring agent. The monitoring agent starts automatically after installation and when the operating system boots.
The monitoring agent consists of several components:
- agent_service.exe service — starts on Windows boot. Manages inspectors: launches them in each user session, unloads from inactive sessions, and restarts on failure. Always one service process
- agent_inspector.exe inspector — monitoring agent application. Launched by agent_service.exe service in each user session. Task manager may show multiple processes of agent_inspector.exe — one per active session
- agent_inspector_custom.exe inspector — used for tracking activity in Java applications. Works like the standard agent_inspector.exe
- agent_tracking.exe tracking application — (may be included in the agent) extends agent functionality and allows users to track time spent on tasks
To collect employee activity, assign them a license in the system web interface, in the Settings → Users section. By default, new users have no license assigned. Without a license, the agent does not collect or transmit activity.
Available licenses:
- Basic Monitoring
- Extended Monitoring
A license can be assigned in two ways:
- Via bulk assignment:
- Go to the Users section.
- Select the users or departments for which you need to collect activity.
- Click the button with the selected users/departments next to the add button. In the dropdown menu, select License.
- Select the license type: Monitoring (basic) or Monitoring (extended). Click Apply.
- Via a specific user profile:
- Go to the profile of the user for whom you want to enable monitoring.
- Navigate to the Access tab.
- In the License field, select the license type: Monitoring (basic) or Monitoring (extended).
- Click Apply.
Changes to monitoring settings for users do not take effect immediately. The agent receives new settings from the application server every 4 hours.
Stopping the Monitoring Agent
If necessary, you can stop the Operavix Agent monitoring service in the Windows Services console. Requires local administrator rights.
Stopping the Operavix Agent service stops monitoring for all computer users.
You can also restart the monitoring agent service in the Services snap-in. Restarting the service can be used to receive settings from the application server more quickly.
